This book provides a detailed description and research of Russian railroads’ initial history stage and its main character – a locomotive during the least explored period of uprising, establishing and development of this type of transport. The author had collected and systematized the data and statistics in construction, exploitation, numeration of Russian railroads which had the so-called “normal” tracks’ width of 1524 mm along all the Russian railroad routes during the period from 1837 till 1890’s. Many illustrations are presented from archives and private collections being published for the first time ever. This book is aimed for the wide audience of readers interested in history of national railroads.
